Smooth(ie) Start

Nothing gets you in a good mood for the day like a good breakfast. If I’m going to be honest though, I’m often running late and don’t have time to have a proper meal. My quick fix is a breakfast smoothie – it’s easy and delicious!

Smoothies are currently my go-to snack/breakfast because I’ve been so super busy with Orientation Week at my university. My duties have started early in the morning, and it’s tough to sit down and eat breakfast, so I usually blitz up a smoothie.

My favourites smoothies are berry smoothies, but most recipes contain banana (which I don’t eat) and I have had to modify to my liking.

The smoothie I have made today is a mix of fruits, although it is mostly peach.

You will need the following:

  • 1/2 peach
  • 1/2 plum
  • 2 strawberries
  • 1 heaped tbsp blueberries (approx. 20)
  • 2-3 tbsp yogurt
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 tbsp uncooked oats (optional)

To start off the smoothie, I cut the peach into rough cubes. This is the base of our smoothie and will be a dominant flavour.

Next comes the plum, which is also cut into chunks. The skin is left on as it provides even more antioxidants and nutrients.

My two strawberries are next. Before I placed them in my blender bottle, I chopped them into small chunks and removed any “bruised” parts. Following that are my blueberries. I use about 20 small blueberries – I can find them a tad bit overpowering if I add too many more.

My last two ingredients are my yoghurt and chia seeds. I love using low-fat vanilla yoghurt as my “liquid” because it makes the smoothie super creamy and adds the additional vanilla flavour. Chia seeds are a great source of protein and have a distinct nutty flavour that works perfectly in smoothies. Many recipes call for a tablespoon (tbsp) of chia seeds but I prefer a little less to keep my smoothie a bit more liquified. Chia seeds absorb liquid, swell and keep you fuller for longer.

Another ingredient that you can add is oats, which provides texture and fibre, but I left them out today.

The only thing left to do is blend everything together. I love my small Go-Go Blender. It is compact and perfect for my res room, but still boasts a powerful motor. I just press the blending button until everything is combined and then pour the smoothie into a glass. Time to enjoy!

The pale pink/orange smoothie is delicious and perfect to drink, or even eat as a smoothie bowl. It reminds me of the pink Barbie box cupcakes that everyone loved when little (and still love to be honest)! I can’t wait to try out more recipes and drink more yummy smoothies.

Ready. Set. Contour.

Although contouring is “out” according to starlets and their makeup artists, it will always be one of my favourite makeup techniques. My face is somewhat chubby and despite it’s “perfect” oval shape, I do not have carved cheekbones, a sharp jaw or a thin nose (it’s actually rather bulbous). So that’s why I like contouring – I can define my features in the way I want.
